Britain's Queen Victoria reigned 1837-1901 and quickly became 19th century symbol of growing affluence and prosperity. The Industrial Revolution also introduced mass-production, making items that were once exclusive to the Royalty and the wealthy available to everyone at affordable prices. London's Great Exhibition of 1851 showcased the worlds newest innovations and created an intense surge of interest in decoration for every area of the home. The emerging middle classes took advantage of this new-found availablily and invested great pride in their homes and saw them as a symbol of their elevated economic and social status. Across all social classes, Victorian rooms in Europe and America were heavily decorated, full of furniture, rich fabrics, and accented with artistic arrangements of knickknacks, collections, photographs and artifacts. The Victorian style of England and America isn't confined to a single design influence. Victorian design is an eclectic blend of styles including Elizabethan, Classical Greek, Neo-Baroque, Gothic, Queen Anne, Colonial, Egyptian and Oriental elements. Like the Renaissance, artisans pulled from the past to influence the present.
